Good progress on new Cairns Railway Station

Cairns is soon to lose its 80 odd years old railway station. Contractors for the erection of the new station, T. J. Watkins Pty. Lytd., are making good progress on its construction. The new building will he approximately 400 by 40 feet, and about 60 per cent of this Is well advanced. As this section is completed the old wooden building, which measures 155 feet, will be demolished and the new structure will he extended on the site, to Its full length. Above Is seen the existing station, which has served Cairns for 60 odd years, the picture below shows the stage construction has reached on the new building. It will be a two storey brick structure, except for a third floor storage area and clock tower. In the centre, the steel framework of which is being fabricated, as can be seen In the picture. Contract price for the building In approximately £232,000.
