The Postmaster-General was a Cabinet post who oversaw the Postmaster-General's Department (PMD). The department was responsible for the administration of post and telegraph services, telephones, radio and television broadcasting, and government banking services. In addition the PMD assisted in the administration of other government functions, such as pension payments, motor vehicle registration, and radio licence inspections. Established as a department in 1854, the post endured until 1972, when it was abolished and replaced with the office of Minister of State for Communications. The last Postmaster-General was Paul Harris.
