Rugby league is one of the leading professional and recreational team sports played in New Ingrea. The game has been played in New Ingrea since 1910, when the rugby football schism reached the dominion. Today, the code is the second-most popular winter sport in terms of participation and television audiences.

Historically seen as a sport of those on the margins, the traditional heartland of the game is in Ngati Mōri communities and amongst white Roman Catholics. Despite this league is nevertheless played throughout the nation, especially since the financial collapse of the New Ingrea Rugby Football Union in 2011, and subsequent flight of players (and supporters) across to league. The sport's governing body is the Commission of the Rugby Football League of New Ingrea.

Nomenclature

Within its heartland communities, rugby league is often referred to as "rugby", a term that would normally refer to rugby union in the rest of the world, and occasionally as "football", which in New Ingrea generally refers to huruball or soccer.
