Trackfast (stylised as TRACKFAST) is the freight transportation division of the New Ingrean Railways (NIR), established in 1993 as part of a government-led sectorisation initiative. The division was created to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of freight services within New Ingrea, focusing on both national and inter-island logistics.

As the freight arm of NIR, it provides logistics services across New Ingrea, including the transportation of bulk goods, smaller consignments, and parcels, supporting industries and commerce nationwide.

History

Establishment

Trackfast was established as part of a major restructuring of New Ingrean Railways in July 1993. The initiative aimed to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of freight services, which had previously been managed under a fully-integrated model dating back to the formation of the railways in the 1860. By creating a specialised freight division, NIR sought to meet the growing demands of New Ingrea's industrial and commercial sectors while ensuring alignment with national economic priorities.

Under the original policies of the Tudor government, it was intended that the division would be privatised, along with all other assets of the New Ingrean Railways. To this end, the division was corporatised in May 1995 and registered with the National Companies and Securities Commission as Trackfast Limited.

However, changing attitudes toward free-market neoliberalism, and performance concerns led to the Howlett government reversing course, and reincorporating the organisation in to NIR in 2010.

Future plans

Trackfast performs an essential contribution to New Ingrea's economic growth by ensuring the efficient movement of goods across the country. It is a key component of the national logistics industry, supporting job creation and industrial development.

Future plans for Trackfast include expanding its operations through increased digitalisation and infrastructure upgrades. These plans involve the acquisition of additional rolling stock, the expansion of its intermodal network, and enhanced collaboration with domestic and international freight carriers to improve connectivity.

Operations

Trackfast handles a wide range of freight, including agricultural products, manufactured goods, raw materials, and specialised cargo. Its fleet consists of both diesel and electric locomotives, much of which it inherited in 1993. Despite their age, these locomotives have been refurbished and retrofitted with advanced tracking and safety systems to ensure reliability and meet modern occupational health and safety standards. The division also operates several intermodal terminals, facilitating seamless transitions between rail and road transportation.

Rolling Stock

Trackfast utilises a diverse range of rolling stock tailored to meet the specific needs of its freight operations. Its fleet includes modern diesel and electric locomotives, as well as specialised wagons for bulk goods, containerised cargo, and other freight types. Maintenance of the rolling stock is managed in-house by Trackfast teams at it's various locomotive and wagon depots, ensuring ongoing operational reliability and compliance with safety standards. This decentralised approach enables Trackfast is a continuation of the pre-sectorisation days, and allows Trackfast adapt its rolling stock to meet evolving client demands while maintaining a high standard of service.

Subdivisions

Trackfast operates through the following subdivisions and partnerships:

Trackfast Logistics

Trackfast Logistics is a wholly owned subdivision of Trackfast, focusing on non-trainload freight services. This subdivision caters to smaller consignments that do not require dedicated freight trains, saving the need for business to use long-haul road transport. Trackfast Logistics also provides warehousing and inventory management services, further integrating door-to-door operations for the division.

BulkFreight

The BulkFreight subdivision specialises in the transportation of large-volume goods, including coal, minerals, grain, timber, and other raw materials. It operates dedicated freight trains equipped with customised wagons designed for specific cargo types, ensuring efficient and secure handling. BulkFreight supports key industries such as agriculture, mining, and energy, forming a cornerstone of Trackfast's operational portfolio.

SeaFreight

The SeaFreight subdivision provides freight solutions between Brunswich Island, Lunen Island, and the smaller islands of the Moonshine Archipelago. This subdivision operates a fleet of specialised cargo vessels capable of handling freight of all sizes, including bulk commodities and containerised goods. Modelled after successful sea freight operations abroad, SeaFreight was established to integrate with Trackfast's rail and road networks in order to provide end-to-end logistical efficiency in the hitherto expensive and difficult inter-island trade market.

This subdivision plays a vital role in connecting the islands together and facilitating the movement of goods in to more remote areas without rail infrastructure. Much of this work is subsidised by the government as a means of supporting regional economies and promoting inter-island trade.

Blue Arrow Parcels

Trackfast is also responsible for much of the operation of Blue Arrow Parcels, a joint venture between NIR and Postal Commission (PONI), with each entity holding a 50% stake. This subdivision specialises in parcel delivery, offering nationwide coverage and competitive delivery times. Blue Arrow Parcels utilises both rail and road networks to provide integrated logistics solutions for e-commerce and retail businesses.

Governance

As a publicly owned division of New Ingrean Railways, Trackfast operates under the oversight of NIR's senior management team. The division is managed by a Director and a team of senior managers responsible for day-to-day operations and alignment with NIR's strategic objectives. This structure supports streamlined decision-making and ensures a focus on operational efficiency and service delivery.
