Early life and education
Churchwell was born in Port Frederick on the 22 February 1854, the youngest son of local doctor and first settler Alexander Churchwell and his second wife Annie (née Munns). Churchwell senior was a £100 subscriber to the New Ingrea Company, entitling him to a 1⁄4-acre (1,012 m2) town block, and 100 acres (40.47 ha) of farmland, but no seat in the Senate of New Ingrea. As a professional family, the Churchwell's lived a comfortable middle class existance in the popular Port Frederick suburb of Beachy End.
